The qualifying scenario has become dull for the US as they only need a victory over Iran to score five points with a goal difference of at least +1. Wales need a surprise win over group favorites England to take four points and look to improve their goal difference, currently -2, against +4 for the Three Lions. Reminder: A draw or loss is out of the question if the US wants to advance. If you win, you are fashionable.
How America is Moving Forward: A Simple Lineup
- With a win Iran: The United States will advance to the round of 16 for the third time in the past four World Cups. It’s that simple. Should England beat Wales, the Three Lions would be seven points ahead, with the United States five points behind. Wales need to win by a huge margin – at least three goals – to overcome the goal difference to the United States.
- With a win Iran and England lose/draw to Wales: The United States has several paths to win the group stage. If England lose to Wales and the US win, they only have five points. If England draws, the United States needs to beat Iran by 4 goals to reverse England’s goal difference advantage.
