University of Virginia’s main campus in Charlottesville is under lockdown Authorities are looking for a suspect believed to be armed and dangerous following reports of a shooting, according to the University of Virginia Police Department.
The campus was advised to shelter in place around 10:40 p.m. following the shooting on Culbreth Road, police said on Twitter.
It is unclear if there were any casualties.
The suspect, later identified by police as Christopher Darnell Jones, is believed to be armed and dangerous. He was described as wearing a burgundy jacket, blue jeans and red shoes, possibly driving a black SUV, according to police.
Multiple police departments are actively searching for Jones, including using a Virginia State Police helicopter, authorities said Monday morning.
Jones, who was listed as a football player on college sports sites in 2018, did not play any games as a freshman. It is unclear if he is still a student at UVA.
CNN has contacted campus police for more information.
Robyn S. Hadley, UVA’s vice president and chief student affairs officer, told students to “take the shelter-in-place order seriously while the situation remains active.”
“We’ve all gotten a couple of shelter-in-place text messages, and they’ve been scary,” Hadley said. an email to UVA’s student body.
“I am like many of you; I am sheltering in place and in direct contact with university leadership and UPD…if you are not inside and not safe, seek safety immediately,” Hadley said. It added that multiple police jurisdictions are working to find the suspect.
