“This is a great opportunity for students to broaden their career horizons and learn how a university startup is becoming a national health software provider,” said Susan Scherreik, director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE). December. The September field trip kicks off a new CIE program in which students will be regularly invited to visit the companies of successful Seton Hall entrepreneurs, she said.
Fusion manages the health records of 350,000 inmates daily, the largest provider of its kind, and is growing rapidly without outside investment. The joint venture has been accredited by INC. for four consecutive years. Magazine has been named one of America’s fastest growing companies and the ninth fastest growing privately held small company in the state. Fortune magazine named it one of the best places to work in the New York metro area, and Fusion was named to Deloitte’s Fast 500 list of America’s fastest-growing technology companies.
CIE will provide complimentary transportation to and from the event, including a tour of company facilities and a lunch with Jakovcic and other senior staff. Field trip participants will leave the South Orange campus at 9:30 p.m. and return to campus at 1:30 p.m., Scherreik said.
Jakovcic attributes Fusion’s success to his dynamic staff. “Our fundamental belief is that employee satisfaction is critical to achieving our mission and vision, so we have created a supportive team-based atmosphere,” Jakovcic said. Brian Sumereau, ’21, joined Fusion after graduating from Stillman, where he majored in finance and information technology and earned a certificate in business analysis and market research. Sumereau, who is also a member of the Gerald P. Buccino Leadership Program, said students often overlook opportunities at small companies. But Sumereau said one of the advantages of working at Fusion was the exposure to many different departments early in his career, including management, analytics, programming and accounting.
Jakovcic studied finance while at Stillman and was president of the Entrepreneurship Club. He maintains close ties with his alma mater and currently chairs the CIE Advisory Board. Last year, Yakovcic was inducted into Seton Hall University’s Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. In addition, he was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2020.
