More than 900 local business, community and government leaders are expected to attend this year’s Smart Growth Summit on Long Island this Friday.
Organized by Vision Long Island, the event will be held at Woodbury’s Crest Hollow Country Club with 20 workshops and more than 140 speakers discussing topics related to helping small businesses through COVID recovery, downtown revitalization and infrastructure investments .
Other topics at this year’s summit include transportation, clean energy and water infrastructure. The small business group will address financing for survival, promoting downtown and supporting MWBE. There will also be sessions on job training, affordable housing and transit-oriented development.
State of Towns and Villages team includes Smithtown Superintendent Ed Wehrheim, Babylon Superintendent Rich Schaffer, Islip Superintendent Angie Carpenter, Hempstead Superintendent Don Clavin, Oyster Bay Superintendent Joseph Saladino, North Hempstead Superintendent Jenn Desena, Riverhead Superintendent Yvette Aguiar, Village of Hempstead Mayor Waylyn Hobbs , Westbury Village Mayor Peter Cavallaro, Farmingdale Village Mayor Ralph Ekstrand, Amityville Village Mayor Dennis Siry and Glen Cove City Mayor Pamela Panzenback.
The lunch was attended by New York Secretary of State Robert Rodriguez, who An update from Albany on the state’s approach to local community grants and resources will be provided. State Senators Kevin Thomas, Mario Mattera and State Senators-Elect Monica Martinez, Jack Martins and Steve Rhoads A preview of the 2023 Albany Legislative Session will be provided.Speakers also included Nassau County Legislature Chairman Richard Nicolelo and Suffolk County Legislature Chairman Kevin McCaffrey, who will talk about their efforts to help Main Street businesses.
The Long Island Main Street Coalition will be represented at the summit by members from 45 different downtown communities that have developed plans to manage their business districts, future development and preservation.
Additionally, there is a Long Island Youth Summit that incorporates students from St. Louis. Saint Joseph’s University, SUNY Old Westbury, Hofstra University, Farmingdale State University and local high schools aim to involve young people in their communities’ planning processes, including workforce training to identify potential Work.
