Police: Multiple dead, injured in Chesapeake Walmart shooting

CHESAPEAKER, Va. (The Wave) — Chesapeake police say a suspect in a mass shooting at a Walmart near Battlefield Boulevard is behind the attack. died.

It was unclear how many people were killed or injured in the shooting, but police said there were multiple people in both. A police spokeswoman told WAVY’s Michelle Wolf that the death toll did not exceed 10.

Police were still moving through the building and people were asked to stay out of the way. A call was received at 10:12 p.m. Tuesday to report a shooting. The Walmart Supercenter was open to the public at the time.

There was still a heavy police response outside the store, with more than 40 emergency vehicles outside. WAVY is still working to learn more.

Virginia Sen. Louis Lucas, who represents that part of the Chesapeake, issued a statement Tuesday night saying: “The latest mass shooting in the United States occurred tonight at a Walmart in my district in Chesapeake, Virginia. Feeling very sad. I will not rest until we find a solution to end our nation’s gun violence epidemic.”
