Miss Gulfport (WLOX) – It might take a little footwork, but Rich Jackson’s machine can still sew.
And it can still be sold.
“Based on the serial number, it was manufactured in 1910,” he said. “It works.”
The sewing machine is one of Jackson’s favorite items, but there are many more. You name it and he sells it – the Mississippi Antiques Gallery is the place to do it.
“I’m sure it’s going to take off. I love the building, I love the people, because I’ve been to other places and this is where I love it.”
After years of setbacks and delays, the gallery is now officially ready for business.
Seller Pat Pennell specializes in building and refinishing furniture. Again, she was impressed with the space.
“I think it’s one of the best I’ve seen,” she said. “It’s all really high-quality stuff. It’s not your garage sale stuff, but it’s a real antiques emporium.”
The mall has been open for about three weeks, but Saturday was the grand opening.
Catherine Bennett, co-manager and creative director: “You drive by for almost three years waiting for us to open,” says Catherine Bennett, co-manager and creative director. “But we’re gentlemen. We’re open, and we’re happy for you to come shop. We’ve got everything you can imagine. There’s so much space and so many hidden treasures.”
That’s exactly what shopper Dhiana Skrmetti wanted.
“We like to be frugal, we just like to find unique items,” she said. “That’s why we stopped by to see what they have to offer here.”
Shopper Ali Aldrich is doing his part to spread the word.
“I think it’s big,” she said. “I really think so. I’ve actually talked to some of my friends in Baton Rouge who love antiques and stuff and they’ll come over after Christmas.”
The second phase of the mall will be in February and March. When complete, it will have 50,000 square feet of space and room for 400 vendors.
Gallery hours are Wed-Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday noon-5pm
