Homes are getting smarter every year as innovations like smart temperature and humidity sensors and yard robots replace simple thermostats and lawn mowers. Even the already handy stick vacuum has undergone incredible evolution.
Dyson has become a leader in the vacuum game with its first-class technology and humanized design. We even named their V8 Absolute one of the best vacuums at one point. They continue to make reliable, easy-to-use and powerful vacuum cleaners, and with their latest version, the V15 Detect, they’ve created the smartest vacuum cleaner yet. But does a gadget designed to remove dust and grime need to be so smart?
I’ve been testing the Dyson V15 Detect for almost six months and I have some thoughts. Read my Dyson V15 Detect review to learn more about this smart vacuum and see if it’s worth the money.

What does Dyson V15 Detect contain?
Dyson offers a variety of versatile accessories for the V15 Detect vacuum cleaner for multi-purpose cleaning. The Laser Slim Fluffy cleaning head can be removed for a more basic Digital Motorbar, which I use as my default accessory. The Digital Motorbar effectively picks up dust and long hairs from carpets and hardwood floors. I am most impressed by its anti-tangle properties. My roommate and I both have long hair that can be hidden in the rug. The Motorbar picks up all of our hair without clogging the suction source, which has happened with other vacuums I’ve used in the past.
Another one of my favorite tools is the composition tool. I use it to clean baseboards and hard-to-reach cracks. Most of the other accessories are collecting dust in my cleaning supply storage corner. While the Dyson made it super easy to install all the accessories, my laziness got the better of me and I stuck with what I knew. I’m already cleaning my floors and I’m too lazy to figure out which upholstery attachment I’m picking up for free off the streets of NYC to clean my couch.
If you’re the kind of person who likes vacuum attachments, the tapered design of the hair screw tool looks especially appealing to pet owners. The tool is specially designed to pick up pet hair and can be used on pet beds or furniture covered in dog hair.
Dyson V15 detection laser technology
The Dyson V15 Detect is Dyson’s most innovative and intelligent vacuum cleaner yet. It has a removable head that illuminates part of the floor with a green laser so you can see fine dust and debris you might otherwise miss.
In my testing, I’ve found that lasers work best in dark or dimly lit rooms. In areas with natural light or overhead lighting, it’s of little use. I also found that the Slim Laser Fluffy attachment has significantly less suction than the Motorbar. I also don’t understand its mission. It illuminates the path of the vacuum, which means it illuminates the dust I’ve been planning to tumble over. In the six months I’ve been testing the V15 Detect, I’ve never opted for this attachment when I really wanted to clean floors. It was a fun party prank to show off to friends, but I was so impressed with the Motorbar that I never wanted to take it off.
Dyson V15 detection LCD screen
The Dyson V15 Detect also features an LCD screen that can show users scientific evidence that their vacuum cleaner is running at high capacity. It also shows how much time is left on the battery, which I do find very useful. Before I got this Dyson, I used a handheld vacuum that would accidentally drain the battery in the middle of cleaning. With the V15 Detect, I always know when to charge it so it can last the entire cleaning session.
The actual “scientific evidence” of deep cleaning shown on the screen proves to be of little use. Frankly, before writing this review, I didn’t even know what the little bar stood for. Yes, I could have read the manual or done a quick Google search, but in the end the evidence for the deep cleaning was in the pudding, or in this case, the floor. My rugs really never looked so fluffy and fresh, and even after five minutes of sweeping on what seemed to me an almost clean floor, I could see how much dust and hair had collected in the litter box. Maybe it’s an interesting upgrade if you’re super into gadgets, but it’s not critical to the V15 Detect’s performance.
Overall performance of V15 detection
Despite some unnecessary tech upgrades, the Dyson V15 Detect is an impressive and extremely capable vacuum cleaner. It works really well on my back and hardwood floors, and I use it to clean cobwebs in corners and on ceilings. It absorbs mistakes that I dare not crush. It has dusted and vacuumed the floors. It even picks up debris that crumbles off my brick wall and falls onto my books.
Compared to other vacuums I’ve used and tested, this one has noticeably stronger suction when used on my back. It picks up fine dust and particles invisible to the naked eye and quickly fills up the bin. It also intelligently adapts to the floor type and adjusts the suction accordingly. You can still choose high or low power modes, but the automatic mode works well when moving from hard floors to carpet. It does have about an hour of runtime in automatic mode.
Speaking of the trash can, I’m amazed how long it lasts without being emptied because it looks so small. I empty out every two months or so. Having said that, my apartment is very small. For larger spaces or homes, the litter box can become a hassle as you have to empty it frequently. Also, there’s a button to pop the litter box out of the vacuum wand, but I still found myself having to reach in to get rid of large clumps and tangles of hair. It’s pretty annoying and makes me long for the days of bagged vacuum cleaners. Still, a dusty hand is a small price to pay for an exceptionally clean floor.
Should you buy the Dyson V15 Detect?
While I absolutely love the power and suction of this vacuum, it’s not entirely necessary to buy it. There are other stick vacuums made by Dyson that are almost as powerful and cost a lot less. The smart features on the V15 Detect are mostly unused or underrated. The average vacuum user doesn’t need a cleaning report or a laser, they just want something that cleans their floors quickly and efficiently. This vacuum does exactly that, but it’s a costly upgrade without much in return.
So, if you are someone who loves the latest technology or loves gadgets and technology, then this vacuum is for you. If you’re willing to shell out $700 for a vacuum that works just fine, you won’t be disappointed.
