2022 Week 17 Fantasy Football Sleeper
🚨Attention🚨 These are sleepers. They won’t copy my rankings 100%. This is chasing gains, and often comes with more risk.
Like last week, I’m going to mix it up. At this point you don’t need to write a paragraph for each player. So, using the APA (link above), I’ll give you some good and bad matchups for the fringe beginner (aka, sleepers or possibly a bench). That doesn’t mean that the good ones have to be started, or that the bad ones need to be put on hold everywhere. These are just thoughts on the potential upside and players you might want to think twice about when you have a quality replacement on hand.
quarterback
good game
- Aaron Rogers, GB – Rodgers is a field game this season, but at least the Vikings have given up double-digit fantasy scoring per quarterback this year…well…with Rodgers in Week 1 After 3.7 points.
- Russell Wilson, Denmark — Speaking of the floor, Wilson has scored about eight points in three of his past four games, but the Chiefs let Wilson score his second-highest total of the season in Week 14.
- Jared Goff, Det – Goff not only played well outdoors, but he had one of his best Week 16 games, and now he’s heading home to face the Bears.
- Brock Purdy, SF — Mike Jones is the only quarterback not hitting double figures against the Raiders, while Purdy has averaged between 14.3 and 21.7 in each of his four starts.
shower showdown
- Taylor Heinicke/Carson Wentz, WSH – Yes, the Browns have the upper hand against the three worst quarterbacks in the last four games, but they’ve also limited Joe Burrow and Josh Allen, and the team can play without needing to pass deal with them.
- Deshaun Watson, CLE — Not only is Watson still rusty, since Week 3, the Chiefs have allowed just one quarterback over Justin Fields’ 18.4 points, and that’s Jalen Hertz’s 21.8 points.
- Derek Carr, LV – Few, if any, do a better job of restricting quarterbacks than the 49ers, allowing only two quarterbacks to score a maximum of 17.4 points and keeping 8 to 10.3 points or fewer.
- Geno Smith, SEA – Smith has struggled in his last two games, 238-1-0 against the 49ers and 215-1-1 against the Chiefs, and will now have to try to bounce back against the Jets. They’ve held eight quarterbacks to 14.1 points or fewer, and no quarterback has thrown more than a touchdown since Week 3.
run back
good game
- Zonova Knight, NYJ — Knight gets a favorable Seahawks matchup, but more importantly, Mike White is back at quarterback and he knows how to use his running backs as receivers.
- Tyler Algaier, ATL – Leading the backfield, he has 20.1 and 13.7 over the past two games, while Allgeier faced the Cardinals, allowing a combination of 27-108-0 rushing and 14-13-107-1 receiving line for Leonard Fournette and Ratchard White.
- Brian Robinson, WSH — Antonio Gibson gets bumped, but even if he doesn’t, the Browns are a favorable matchup and the team can count on the run. Last week, Alvin Kamara went 20-76-1 in their favor.
- Zack Moss, IND — It felt dangerous given the state of the Colts’ offense, but Moss had a clear lead in Week 16 and saw work like a bell, and the Giants have struggled against the run all year.
shower showdown
- Jeff Wilson/Raheem Mostert, MIA -Wilson regained the lead in Week 16, but that’s still a split that could lead to frustrating usage, plus we have a game against the Patriots defense and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
- Ken Walker, SEA — It’s tough to bench Walker anywhere, but the Jets’ defense is strong almost everywhere, allowing a sub-4.0 YPC and scoring 18.7 points against no one but Nick Chubb. Even with 25 touches (22 carries), Travis Etienne has just 112 yards and 4.5 yards per touch.
- gus edwards ball – Edwards has been a solid floor RB3, but he might find it tough against the Steelers. Edwards went 13-for-66 against them in Week 14, but Josh Jacobs was stuck after a week of no action from the Panthers against them, and several teams in 70 years have even None of the players sprinted.
- Najee Harris, PIT — Harris’ numbers, on the other hand, were in his favor, but he was saved by a touchdown (12-for-33) against Baltimore in Week 14. In fact, the Ravens allowed just three running backs of 80-plus yards, and no running back had more than 100 yards (Nick Chubb went 21-for-99).
wide receiver
good game
- Christian Watson, Allen Lazard, Romeo Doubs, GB — If Watson is out, Lazard and Doubs almost have to start. If Watson plays, he’ll lock in Lazard and Doubs as valuable upside players. Last week against Minnesota, all three of the Giants’ receivers scored 9.9+ points, and as recently as Week 14, Detroit’s four receivers combined for 10.4+ points against the Vikings.
- Brandin Cooks, Chris Moore, HOLD – As long as Cox is on the field, he’s a solid WR3, and while the Jaguars hold off the Jets, that’s Zach Wilson and poor weather conditions. The Jaguars have allowed two double-figure wideouts in five games, with three wideouts hitting that mark in two of those games.
- Russell Gage, Mike Evans, TB – Gage has replaced Evans as the number one. 2. At least in production. If you’re looking for a reason to risk Evans’ upside (can’t believe I just said that), the Panthers are ripe for … the outdoors after allowing Gauff to light them up.
- Rashid Shahid, NO – And that’s only in the absence of Chris Olaf, because I’m only risking one Saints receiver a week. The Saints will have to contend with the passing of the Eagles, who are more vulnerable in the second half of the season.
shower showdown
- Terry McLaughlin, Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samuel, WSH — Back in the Browns game, McLaughlin and Dotson might be tough to come off the bench, but the stakes are greater than normal at both quarterbacks.
- Amari Cooper, Donovan Peoples-Jones, CLE — The same goes for the Browns duo, as the commander has allowed just 13.1 points over Justin Jefferson since Week 7.
- from Jefferson, LAR — Sure, the Rams let the Broncos down, but it wasn’t because of any wide-ranging performances, and since everyone’s healthy, the Chargers have often locked down opponents.
- Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, The New York Times – Even with White back, it’s risky to bet on Davis or Moore, as the Rams, 49ers and Chiefs haven’t had a WR for the first 31 yards against Seattle the past three weeks. On top of that, against the Seahawks, only 13 receivers scored 10 points, none topped 18.2, and five teams didn’t have double-digit scorers.
tight end
good game
- Cole Kermet, CHI — Good matchup, no weather issues, Kmet have 24 goals in their last four games.
- Dalton Schultz, DAL — Schultz has been quiet the past two games, but has scored 10+ points in four of his previous six and the Titans have given up some of their tightest games of the year (Evan Engram and Mo Alie-Cox anyone there?).
- Gerald Everett, LAC – Since Week 8, the Rams have allowed six double-digit tight end points.
shower showdown
- Logan Thomas, WSH – Against the Browns, there were only three double-digit scores (again, the team didn’t need them), one of which was Taysom Hill, sprinting 9-56-1.
- Tyler Higby, LAR – Higbee is back with Baker Mayfield, but this week could be tough again given the Chargers matchup. Like the Browns, they’ve allowed just three double-digit scoring games…one of them, though, was a monster game by the Kelces.
- Hayden Hurst, CIN – Assuming he returns, it’s risky to use Hurst against Bill. Only Kelce — that guy must be good — scored more than 8.0 points against them.
