Nantucket, Mass. (AP) — President Joe Biden After delivering at least six pumpkin pies to firefighters in Massachusetts over Thanksgiving Thursday, his toddler grandson walked away wearing a red fire hat atop his curly blond hair fire hat.
“Oh wow,” Biden was heard saying when the nearly 3-year-old Beau was seen coming out of the headquarters building wearing a hat. The president was with firefighters who lined up outside the building to welcome him.
Earlier in the day, Biden and his wife Jill thanked firefighters and other first responders in a phone conversation with the host of NBC’s broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.
“I want to say thank you to the firefighters and police and first responders. They never rest,” he said by phone. The White House said the Bidens spoke late Thursday with troops from six branches of the U.S. military based in Europe, at sea, Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.
“We remember them every day,” he said on the radio. “God bless our army.”
Jill Biden Appearing to try to get her grandson to talk to the firefighters, Beau didn’t look up. She was overheard saying she didn’t know why he was so quiet.
In brief remarks with reporters, Biden said he hopes the incoming Republican-controlled House will continue U.S. aid to Ukraine. He also said his team was in talks to avoid a freight rail strike In early December, this could further disrupt the economy.
After the visit, Biden returned to his home in Nantucket for the holiday with his family, which included son Hunter and his wife Melissa — Beau’s parents — and daughter Ashley.
They camped at a sprawling waterfront compound along Nantucket Harbor owned by David Rubenstein, co-founder of private equity firm The Carlyle Group. Biden will celebrate Thanksgiving at home in 2021.
The Biden family has a tradition of spending Thanksgiving on Massachusetts Island for more than 40 years.
